By the numbers: CeeDee Lamb vs. DeVonta Smith

Move over Lebron/Jordan there’s a new debate taking over professional sports: Who’s better, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb or his NFC East counterpart, DeVonta Smith?

Social media can be funny, but it’s downright hysterical when Eagles and Cowboys fans start doing math to win an argument. Have a look at this post intended to prove Lamb’s superiority over Smith from a Cowboys fan:

Using the NFL’s 2022 season as the only criteria, Lamb can be seen as a slightly better receiver. He had 28 more catches, 257 yards and two more touchdowns than Smith while averaging .5 more yards per catch.

Lamb did this as the Cowboys No. 1 receiver, something Smith hasn’t been since 2021. That year, Smith had 64 catches, 916 yards and five touchdowns. Lamb’s numbers were also better across the board that year.

But when you add the stats from each of their first two seasons, the numbers are slightly in Smith’s favor with six more catches, 75 more yards and one more touchdown than Lamb.

Of course, there are all kinds of intangibles not being considered here. First, Lamb was able to join a team that already had a No.1 receiver in Amari Cooper. Smith had to be the guy when he joined the Eagles’ dismal passing game as a rookie in 2021.

Lamb also had the luxury of starting his career with an established quarterback in Dak Prescott. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had an amazing 2022 season, but the jury was certainly out on him in 2021.

It’s worth noting that Lamb had the sixth-most yards among NFL receivers last year, the second time he’s been in the top-20. Smith had the ninth-most yards in 2022, up from 28th place the year before.

Here’s the bottom line: At this point in their young careers, Lamb and Smith should be counted among the best receivers in football. Debates are fun, but it’s really too early to say who is better.

Fans that prefer a bigger receiver will appreciate Lamb at 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds. Those that enjoy a more precise route-runner will enjoy Smith. Generously listed at 170 pounds, Smith is one of the game's smaller receivers but he’s yet to miss a game in his career.

The good news is that both players get to make their case for real this week. The Cowboys open their regular season against the Giants on Sunday night, while the Eagles travel to play the Patriots.
