Chicago Bears top draft choice Caleb Williams. David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

New Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is already in contact with some of his new teammates, and he has told at least one of them that they ideally will not be needed much.

The Bears surprised many by drafting Iowa punter Tory Taylor in the fourth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday. According to Taylor, Williams reached out to him quickly after his selection with a pretty funny message.

“Hey, you’re not going to punt too much this year,” Williams told Taylor.

The Bears nabbed Williams at No. 1 and Rome Odunze at No. 9 to go along with DJ Moore and Keenan Allen. In other words, the new quarterback has plenty of weapons to try to make sure Taylor is not needed. That would make the Bears’ decision to use a fourth-round pick on a punter even stranger, but that might be a problem they are willing to deal with.

Williams has received some criticism from anonymous scouts before the draft. His confidence is clearly unaffected, however, especially if he’s essentially telling his new punter that those services will not be required very often.
