No. 1 overall pick QB Caleb Williams David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Caleb Williams sends hilarious text to punter Bears just drafted

The Chicago Bears drafted a punter in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but he's not your typical punter. Iowa's Tory Taylor is one of the best punters in collegiate history.

Taylor, an Australian native who stands 6-foot-4 and 223 pounds, won the Ray Guy Award as the nation's best punter and was a first-team All-American. Per PFF, Taylor has boomed 116 punts inside the 20 since 2020, which is 37 more than the next-best punter.

As great as Taylor is, the hope is he doesn't see the field much. The Bears drafted USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick and Washington wideout Rome Odzune with the No. 9 overall pick after earlier this offseason trading for receiver Keenan Allen and their offense should be immensely better than it was a season ago.

Williams introduced himself to his new teammate in epic fashion, sending Taylor a humorous text that highlights expectations from the Bears offense.

Per The Athletic's Kevin Fishbain, Williams' text to Taylor said "Hey, you're not going to punt too much here."

Even if Taylor doesn't punt much, he'll be an asset when his number is called.

"One of the best punters I've ever seen," Bears general manager Ryan Poles said, "just in terms of his placement as well as his leg strength to be able to flip the field."

Taylor, who is 26 years old, set NCAA single-season records in 2023 with 4,479 punt yards and a 48.2-yard average. A team should rarely be excited about adding a punter, but Taylor is an exception.

"Tory is a weapon for the whole football team," Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said. "The punt and pins are huge. This guy is a big talent, so we're excited to have him."

Taylor's used to punting in cold weather across the midwest in Big Ten action for Iowa and joining the Bears seems like a perfect fit.

"It's just really an absolute honor to be a Bear," Taylor said. "I just can't really believe it to be honest. It's crazy."

Also crazy, Taylor's punting abilities, which could wind up breaking NFL records.
