Wide receiver and kick return Calvin Austin III has been named the Pittsburgh Steelers winner of the Ed Block Courage Award for 2023.
Austin returned to action this fall after missing all of his rookie season with a foot injury suffered in training camp.

The Ed Block Courage Award has been given out annually since 1984, honoring one player from each NFL team who shows commitment to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. Players vote for the winner, who has been courageous in returning from an injury or other life-changing event.

The Steelers have usually voted for players that are returning from injury over the last few years. Ryan Shazier, James Conner, Stephon Tuitt, Devin Bush and Tyson Alualu are the last five winners of the award.

The award is named in honor of Ed Block, a former head athletic trainer for the Baltimore Colts. Block was a trainer for the Baltimore Colts from 1954-77. After his retirement, an annual award was given in Block’s honor for a Colts player with outstanding character. In 1984, after the Colts moved to Indianapolis, the award was expanded to honor one player on each NFL team.
