Cam Newton has great take on Bill Belichick-Panthers rumor

Well-known NFL insider Ben Volin of the Boston Globe raised eyebrows earlier this week linking New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick with the Carolina Panthers. "League sources who know the coaching market and know" Belichick believe Carolina may be "on the prowl" to land him this offseason after Panthers owner David Tepper fired Frank Reich on Monday.

Former Panthers star quarterback and one-time NFL Most Valuable Player Cam Newton addressed the idea during the latest edition of Newton's "4th&1" podcast.

"That would be a win-win-win-win for David Tepper," Newton explained, according to Lauren Campbell of MassLive. "The thing that I know would be the enticing lure to it, is because Tepper will give him everything that he would need."

It's been rumored throughout the season even before the Patriots fell to 2-9 that team owner Robert Kraft will part ways with Belichick this winter. While Belichick reportedly signed a multiyear contract extension this past offseason, it's believed that deal only runs through the 2024 campaign.

Volin wrote that Belichick "clearly wants to keep coaching" past his 72nd birthday that he'll celebrate in April, and he has already been linked with potential moves to the Washington Commanders and Los Angeles Chargers.

During a Tuesday news conference, Tepper backed rookie quarterback Bryce Young despite Young's struggles. It's unknown if Belichick would want to coach Young, but Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio noted on Tuesday that some candidates for the Carolina job won't want to attach themselves to Young "based simply on his height."

Newton's comments about Tepper giving Belichick "everything that he would need" suggest Belichick or any other proven coach may be allowed to move on from Young before next year's draft. However, Carolina's trade with the Chicago Bears this past March will likely prevent the Panthers from replacing Young with a top-tier prospect such as USC Trojans star Caleb Williams or Drake Maye of the North Carolina Tar Heels.
