Cam Newton: Mac Jones is 'cool like the other side of the pillow'

New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton probably isn't competing with rookie Alabama Crimson Tide product Mac Jones for the starting job this summer, as all indications are that head coach Bill Belichick plans to stick with Newton as his QB1 unless Jones performs well beyond expectations during training camp sessions and preseason games.

The two signal-callers, thus, have spoken highly of each other on multiple occasions since the Patriots used a first-round pick to draft Jones. That trend continued on Friday.

"Oh man, [he’s] cool like the other side of the pillow, you know what I’m saying? You never know when he’s really down himself, you don’t really necessarily know when he’s up either," Newton said of Jones, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "He’s real cool. I’m surprised [with] his knowingness of hip-hop music. You catch him in the locker room every time quoting some Future, some ‘Baby. But those are things that you’ve just got to learn with time. We had an opportunity to meet in OTAs but you don’t really get it. And then it’s still another curve that’s going to get during game times. It’s good that we get preseason games and things like that so you’ll know these live bullets.

"So I’m pretty much here for him just like Brian [Hoyer] is here for him. And I know it’s reciprocated on all fronts."

Last month, Jones told reporters that everyone inside New England's quarterback room was working "to get better together" and explained that he was "just learning from" the others as a first-year pro. Less than a week later, Newton said he supported the decision to draft Jones "110%" and suggested he's ready to step aside and become a mentor as a backup if asked to embrace that role this fall.

Time will tell if all involved continue to get along once regular-season games begin in September.
