Cam Newton not opposed to returning to Patriots on one-year deal

Cam Newton's future with the New England Patriots is uncertain. The veteran quarterback will become a free agent in March, and the Patriots are considering all of their options.

Newton said earlier this week that he is not considering retirement despite his iffy market. On the "I AM ATHLETE" podcast with Fred Taylor, Chad Johnson and Brandon Marshall, he admitted that he would be open to returning to the Patriots on a one-year deal next season.

Newton's response isn't surprising. His market could be minimal after a subpar 2020 campaign, and he never got the whole Patriots experience.

The 2020 season was significantly more difficult for Newton for several reasons. First, training camp and offseason workouts were very different because of COVID-19. Second, Newton tested positive for the coronavirus in October. He admitted earlier this week that the virus set him back for the whole season.

If he re-signs with the Patriots, Newton should get a better opportunity to learn the system and go through an entire training camp, which may translate to a better 2021 performance.
