Cam Newton says Patriots are a 'match made in heaven for me'

Cam Newton is going to be playing in Tom Brady's shadow throughout his career with the New England Patriots, and as the regular season quickly approaches, many can't wait to see how he fares in his new offense.

Questions about Newton's fit with the Patriots organization have been discussed since he signed with the club in July, but the former Carolina Panthers signal-caller says there's nothing to worry about regarding the topic.

“Honestly, it’s been a match made in heaven for me just knowing I am at a place where everything is pulling in the same direction and everything is geared towards winning,” Newton said on WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show." “Coming from a person that has won at all levels, I feel as if that if I do the things the right way, trusting the same people who have gotten me to this point and trust their coaching, I think this is something that when you look at an opportunity in a timely manner, it can be accomplished.”

While he feels right at home with his new team, Newton revealed that he originally was skeptical about how he'd get along with head coach Bill Belichick. That skepticism quickly subsided, though, and Newton said it's been exciting playing for the long-time Patriots coach.

Newton was named New England's starter for Week 1 just a few days ago, and it doesn't come as a surprise considering he's outplayed both Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer in training camp.

The 31-year-old also was named a captain for the 2020 campaign by his fellow teammates and coaches, who have been very impressed with his drive and work ethic.

There's really no telling how he'll fare with the Patriots, but Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins should give fans a pretty good idea. If things click for Newton and the offense, New England could end up being the team to beat in the AFC East ... again.
