Canadian billionaire reportedly made massive bid to buy Commanders

Steve Apostolopoulos is an interesting character who has had much success in real estate as well as in the world of venture finance. He's a Canadian billionaire, but has recently shown a strong desire in bringing his empire down south to the United States via the purchase of a professional sports team.

Apostolopoulos has had discussions with Michael Jordan to buy the Charlotte Hornets, but ESPN's Brian Windhorst and Adam Schefter report that the mogul's attention has now turned to the NFL as well as to the nation's capital.

He's now reportedly in the running to buy the Washington Commanders from beleaguered owner Dan Snyder. In fact, he's interested enough in the purchase that he recently took a tour of Washington's stadium — FedEx Field — as well as the training facility.

"There are only three known bidders for the Commanders — groups led by Josh Harris, Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta and now Apostolopoulos — but there has been speculation that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos could potentially join the mix," Windhorst and Schefter reported.

Schefter then followed up with a tweet saying that Apostolopoulos has already actually submitted a fully funded bid for the Commanders, worth $6 billion.

Apostolopoulos, who was born in Toronto, founded Six Ventures Inc., which is a private equity venture fund. He's also the managing partner of Triple Group of Companies, which is a Toronto-based full-service commercial real estate firm.

Forbes valued the Commanders franchise at $5.6 billion in 2022. For comparison's sake, the Dallas Cowboys had the highest valuation in the NFL, checking in at $8 billion.
