Cardinals' Kliff Kingsbury offers update on Kyler Murray's status for 2023 season

Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury has offered an expected update regarding quarterback Kyler Murray for next season.

Per Darren Urban of the Cardinals' website, Kingsbury admitted on Wednesday that Murray will "probably" miss the start of the 2023 campaign. It was previously learned that Murray went down with a season-ending torn ACL during the Week 14 loss to the New England Patriots back on Dec. 12, and Urban pointed out that the 25-year-old underwent successful ACL surgery that also included some meniscus repair on Tuesday.

Murray addressed the procedure on Wednesday afternoon:

While it's unknown exactly when the Cardinals will begin the 2023 regular season, traditional recovery timelines for such injuries always suggested Murray wouldn't be ready to face live defenses during the closing days of next summer. Kingsbury added on Wednesday that "we know that's a discussion that has to be had" as it pertains to who will start in place of Murray for at least Week 1 in September.

The Cardinals picked up Murray's fifth-year option this past spring and later signed him to a five-year contract extension reportedly worth $230.5 million with $160 million guaranteed. According to ESPN stats, he heads into Week 18 ranked 19th among eligible quarterbacks with a 51.7 total QBR and 23rd with an 87.2 passer rating this season. In fewer than 11 completed games, he threw 14 touchdown passes and seven interceptions, and he also contributed three rushing scores.

4-12 Arizona ends a disappointing season at the 12-4 San Francisco 49ers this coming Sunday afternoon.
