Cardinals QB Colt McCoy to join USFL TV commentary booth

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Colt McCoy is on track to be the team's starter for Week 1 in September but is already thinking about a possible next career move.

According to Darren Urban of the Cardinals' website, McCoy will serve as a color analyst for NBC's coverage of the upcoming United States Football League season.

"I've never really called a live game but I have done a lot of behind-the-scenes work," McCoy said on Wednesday. "I've enjoyed that process. I love the game. I have to study up on the rules — their rules are a little bit different — and I have to learn the players, the coaches, the teams. It's a little bit different than what we do in the NFL, but I'm excited and I think it's a great opportunity working with some great people at NBC."

McCoy's first assignment won't be Sunday's clash between the Michigan Panthers and Houston Gamblers, as he won't begin working games until late May or early June. His USFL duties shouldn't interfere with his Cardinals-related work as he recovers from an unspecified injury that was first mentioned in February.

Arizona QB1 Kyler Murray could miss at least half of the 2023 season after he underwent knee surgery in January.

"I have thought a lot about it," McCoy added about potentially making a full-time jump to the broadcast booth down the road. "I'm not saying this is what I'm going to do because I don't know how good I'm going to be. It's an art. In saying that, I'm thankful they chose me to get some practice and do this and see where it goes."

According to Jess Root of Cards Wire/USA Today, new Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon told reporters Tuesday that McCoy is "doing great" coming off "a minor offseason procedure."

The 36-year-old may need to be healthy and fully dedicated to the cause to remain above fellow backup David Blough on the depth chart through summer workouts.
