It may only be the NFL preseason, but the Arizona Cardinals’ social media team is in midseason form. The squad trolled Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos pretty hard following Friday night’s 18-17 victory.
Arizona won Friday’s preseason contest in exciting fashion. Trailing 17-10, David Blough threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Brian Cobbs with two seconds remaining in the game. The Cardinals then converted a two-point conversion on the legs of Emari Demercado to win the game.
But that might not have been the best part of Arizona’s victory. It was how the social media team trolled Wilson and the Broncos afterwards — using a viral video to add insult to injury:
The reference is to Wilson’s admission that he did high knees and other leg workouts during a team flight to London. Turns out, it’s still funny a year later.
We love it when franchises allow their social media teams to be creative and have fun. It provides fans with even more entertainment on gameday.
Wilson threw 13 passes in Friday night’s preseason game. He completed seven for 93 yards and a touchdown. The veteran quarterback was sacked once in the contest.
The Broncos opened up a 10-0 advantage in the first half before the Cardinals made a second-half comeback. Arizona tied the game at 10-10 before Denver regained the lead with 1:30 to play in the contest after a Jaleel McLaughlin four-yard touchdown run.
Even though these are preseason games, it was an exciting finish for a Friday night.
Sean Payton comments on Russell Wilson’s performance
Wilson is looking to bounce back after a disastrous 2022 season in Denver, his first with the Broncos. And while it was a bit of an up-and-down night for Wilson, new head coach Sean Payton liked what he saw from the quarterback.
“He’s sharp,” Payton said, per The Denver Gazette. “He’s had a good week of practice and we keep working.”
This is Wilson’s first year in Payton’s offense, there will obviously be a learning curve. But it sounds like the head coach is pretty pleased with the progress his veteran quarterback has made thus far.
There’s still plenty of room for improvement, though.
Denver still has two preseason games remaining on the schedule. The Broncos play the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday, Aug. 19 before closing out preseason action against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, Aug. 26.
Denver opens regular season action at home against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, Sept. 10.
