The Washington Commanders turned the football over to the Cleveland Browns on their first three offensive possessions. Carson Wentz, who made his first start since Week 6, threw two interceptions, and the Commanders’ offense turned the ball over on downs.
Commanders fans booed Wentz and chanted the name of the quarterback Wentz replaced Sunday, Taylor Heinicke.
Fortunately, the Commanders’ defense kept the team in the ball game, holding the Browns to three points.
Before Carson Wentz took the field for the fourth time, he was met with a hug from Commanders defensive end Chase Young. Then, the Commanders’ offense bounced back with a 21-play drive that ended with Wentz scoring on a 4th-and-goal QB sneak to get Washington on the scoreboard.
The Commanders went 96 yards on the touchdown drive. They controlled the football 11:27, converting five third downs. Washington’s rookie running back Brian Robinson had 11 touches on the drive.
The Commanders took a 7-3 lead into halftime. Washington will receive the football to start the second half. So they have another opportunity to wear down the Browns’ defense.
Washington can reach the playoffs with wins in their last two regular-season games. However, a loss with wins by the Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions, and Green Bay Packers would eliminate the Commanders from playoff contention.
