Chargers HC discusses impact of new OC

New offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is making an immediate impact in Los Angeles, which could take pressure off head coach Brandon Staley.

"I left the practice field of the last practice of minicamp saying that was the best throwing session that we've ever had since we've been here," Staley said, per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. "I left the field saying, this is exactly why we hired Kellen."

Staley needs Moore to transform the offense into a juggernaut, so the Chargers can become a legitimate Super Bowl contender, taking him off the hot seat.

"This seat may be the most-red hot of all, and for good reason," wrote Jeff Diamond, a former NFL executive and contributor for The 33rd Team. "Staley also should've won more games with a top-five to top-10 quarterback in Justin Herbert."

Staley has a winning record (19-15) in two seasons as Los Angeles HC but no playoff wins, which raises questions about him stifling Herbert's potential, especially after the QB threw a career-low 25 TDs in 17 games last season.

Consequently, Los Angeles fired Joe Lombardi after a 31-30 wild-card playoff loss to Jacksonville and replaced him with Moore — a former Cowboys OC.

Moore should maximize the offensive talent in Los Angeles since he looked like one of the league's bright, young gurus in four seasons with Dallas. From 2019 to 2022, the Cowboys ranked top-six in scoring three times.

Herbert should flourish under the sharp offensive mind and develop into a bona fide MVP candidate, helping Staley quiet skeptics.
