The Los Angeles Chargers are experimenting with a new backfield, or at least that is what has come out today. Head coach Brandon Staley admitted that the idea is to potentially begin a competition for the running back position, with Joshua Kelley taking over as lead back

While this might sound a bit strange considering Austin Ekeler has been a stellar RB through most of his career, his 2023 campaign has left a lot to be desired. Ekeler has had an issue with fumbles and is currently in the bottom in terms of overall yards.

Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has now commented on the fact that Kelley could be stepping in as RB1.

“We still feel great about Austin. … I don't think we're going to see this drastic change here. Josh [Kelley] earns opportunities, other guys earn opportunities throughout the season.”

Austin Ekeler has been one of the better backs in the league, but it might be time for him to take a step back. Moore seems to indicate that Ekeler is the favored back, though his struggles have led to Kelley receiving a more expanded role.

The Chargers need to pull out all the stops if they are to beat the Broncos on Sunday. Denver has emerged as quite an exciting AFC team with Russel Wilson at the helm. They are also vying for a playoff spot, so the Bolts will have their hands full.

Defensively, the Chargers are sound. Even though they shut out the lowly Patriots, stopping a team from scoring any sort of points is a feat that most teams cannot place a stake in. Should the offense start humming with Joshua Kelley as RB1, this team has a much better shot at the postseason.
