The Los Angeles Chargers have a new regime in charge, and they’re expected to build up the franchise according to Jim Harbaugh’s football philosophy. That means they will emphasize tough, physical play that begins at the line of scrimmage. That also means they will likely try to run the ball well, just as Harbaugh did with the San Francisco 49ers and at Michigan.

And what better way to dominate in the running game than by having a former Wolverine run the ball?

The Chargers have already signed former Ravens running backs JK Dobbins and Gus Edwards in free agency while letting Austin Ekeler walk. They are expected to select a running back at some point during the draft.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano reports that multiple scouts expect the Chargers to do what they can to draft Blake Corum, who was the focal point of Michigan’s running game the last two seasons.

Corum rushed for 1,463 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior and 1,245 yards and 27 touchdowns as a senior for the Wolverines. Corum was a top-10 finisher in Heisman Trophy voting both years.

There is no denying how productive Corum was at Michigan. But the Chargers going out of their way to take Corum in the draft might not be best for the franchise.

Ultimately, we will find out in a few days whether the rumors about the Chargers and Corum turn out to be true.
