The Chicago Bears are in the midst of a rebuild. Part of the challenge of a rebuild is to determine which players are a part of the future and which ones are not. The team has decided on one defensive player. Defensive tackle Andrew Billings has signed a two-year extension with the Bears.
Chicago Bears Andrew Billings Signs Two-Year Extension
Billings signed a one-year deal in free agency and has been one of the bright spots for the Bears defense. While he has not recorded a sack this year, his 14 tackles with three of them being for loss have been essential. Plugging up the middle of the line is key in run defense. Billings also brings a veteran presence which will be great for a young, rebuilding team. The terms of the deal are not known at this time.
First Of Many Extensions?
This is probably not the extension that most Bears fans were hoping for. Cornerback Jaylon Johnson had requested a trade but GM Ryan Poles could not find the right deal. Now the team has to hope that they can keep one of the best young corners in the league in the offseason. Montez Sweat is also a huge question mark. After giving up a second-round pick, Sweat said that he is going to keep his options open. The hope is that Poles and his team are working furiously to try and lock down these players before they hit the open market.
Even though it wasn’t who Chicago Bears fans wanted, keeping Andrew Billings on the team for the foreseeable future is a good move. Hopefully, the Bears can finish the season strong and have something to build on for 2024.
