The Chicago Bears are signing another former Green Bay Packer. After signing Robert Tonyan this offseason, the team is finalizing a deal with Marcedes Lewis who will enter his 18th season in the NFL.

Chicago Bears To Sign Marcedes Lewis

A 2006 first-round pick, Lewis spent his first 12 seasons in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He then spent another five seasons with the hated rivals. Lewis comes back for another season and breaks the record for most seasons played by a tight end. He was previously tied with Jason Witten and Tony Gonzalez . Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy spent time with Lewis in Green Bay and was likely a catalyst behind the signing. The Bears now have a very diverse tight end room and Lewis’ skill set is a perfect fit for the Chicago Bears.

Lewis Is A Perfect Fit

The aforementioned Tonyan and newly extended Cole Kmet are the other tight ends on the roster. They now get to learn from the 18-year veteran but Lewis’ impact will not just be in leadership. He is still one of the best run-blocking tight ends in the NFL. While Justin Fields has been working hard on his passing ability, the Bears’ offense will still heavily feature the run. Having Lewis is like having a sixth offensive lineman. Kmet and Tonyan will complement the veteran very well in passing downs or as decoys.

Full admission. I’m a diehard Packers fan and I can’t be mad at this signing. If Marcedes Lewis manhandles the Packers in week 1 I can’t even be mad. He is one of the most likable players in the league and I am happy that he is getting a chance to play in 2023.
