Could the Kansas City Chiefs try to make a big splash by signing wide receiver Mike Evans?

Just because the Chiefs have won back-to-back Super Bowls does not mean they don’t have some roster issues that need to be addressed.

Kansas City’s most glaring hole, for example, is at the wide receiver position.

Outside of Rashee Rice, the Chiefs are incredibly thin at wide out, and the club is expected to be active in pursuing receivers in free agency next month.

Well, Garrett Podell of CBS Sports thinks Kansas City could be in on arguably the best pass-catcher available in Evans.

There is a caveat, though: Podell notes that Evans would probably have to take less money in exchange for the pursuit of a championship.

The Chiefs don’t have a ton of cap room. Currently, they have just over $16 million in space heading into free agency, and considering they also have to worry about re-signing defensive lineman Chris Jones and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, they may not have much money left over to sign a receiver of Evans’ caliber.

Unless Kansas City decides to let both Jones and Sneed walk or somehow gets very creative with its salary cap, it’s hard to imagine the Chiefs having enough to entice Evans, even if the veteran wants to chase a title.

But the idea of Evans catching passes from Patrick Mahomes is tantalizing, to say the least.

Evans has spent his entire 10-year career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, posting over 1,000 yards in every season. That is good for an NFL record.

This past year, the 30-year-old hauled in 79 receptions for 1,255 yards and a league-leading 13 touchdowns en route to his fifth Pro Bowl appearance.

We’ll see if the Chiefs make a play for Mike Evans in the coming weeks.
