I bet you thought that mock draft season was over, didn't you?
The Kansas City Chiefs traded up with the Buffalo Bills to select WR Xavier Worthy during the first round of the 2024 NFL draft. What could they do on Day 2? I suspect that they will continue to emphasize the offensive side of the ball.
In the process of trading up for Worthy on Day 1, K.C. turned one of their two Day 2 picks (95) into a Day 3 pick (133). I'm hoping the Chiefs can somehow still make two selections on Day 2, because this class is really strong through the first four rounds before a pretty steep drop-off.
One option I considered was pairing fourth-round picks, 131 and 133, to move back up into the third round. I ultimately landed on trading down with an NFC team and acquiring two late third-round picks.
Explaining the trade: The Chiefs send Round 2, No. 64, and a future Day 3 pick to the Green Bay Packers for Round 3, No. 88, and Round 3, No. 91. The Packers need some starting defenders, so they move up over 20 spots and get the best cornerback or linebacker available at pick No. 64.
Round 3, Pick No. 88: TCU OT Brandon Coleman
As much as I'd love to see the Chiefs get aggressive and move up for one of the remaining offensive tackle prospects, they might have a better option in front of them by trading down.
Coleman is my pick for the Chiefs because he already trains with Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith, and Wanya Morris in Frisco, Texas at Duke Manyweather's spot. He battled knee and ankle injuries in 2023, which is one reason he might be available late on Day 2.
“He was really banged-up but found a way to get the job done, and that’s a characteristic that will translate to the NFL,” Manyweather said, via The Athletic. “Finding a way to get the job done when not 100 percent is what Sunday football is all about.”
Coleman is a shade under 6-foot-4 and 313 pounds and he's a talented athlete, recording a 34-inch vertical (96th percentile) a 114-inch broad jump (95th percentile), and a 4.98s 40-yard dash (92nd percentile).
“Athletic testing-wise, he’s going to be impressive,” Manyweather said. “To tell you what type of athlete he is, I think he could legitimately have a shot at playing small forward in the NBA.”
He's also versatile with nearly 1,500 snaps at tackle and over 700 snaps at guard during his last three seasons at TCU.
Round 3, Pick No. 91: TCU TE Jared Wiley
The Xavier Worthy selection certainly solves the lack of a deep threat in the Chiefs' offense, but they still could use another option in the middle of the field. That'll be more evident once WR Rashee Rice is suspended for violating the league's personal conduct policy.
That's why I decided to add another Horned Frog in Wiley. At 6-foot-6 and 249 pounds, the 23-year-old tight end is an explosive athlete for his size. He ran a 4.62s 40-yard dash at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine. He even has a little bit of Travis Kelce to his game.
During the past two seasons at TCU, he put up over 70 catches for 765 yards and 12 touchdowns. I tend to feel he's best-suited to play a role as a move tight end right away, but there is upside for him to develop into a nice in-line blocker as well.
