Chiefs' Harrison Butker on attempting 70-yard field goal: 'I have the distance for it, definitely'

The career long for Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker is a 58-yard field goal he made in overtime of a September 2020 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. But even though he hasn't made an attempt from more than 60 yards out, he's ready to give a 70-yarder try.

"The conditions have to be right. It's got to be warm, probably some wind at your back," Butker told the Kansas City Star. "But I feel like I have the distance for it, definitely."

Last season, the Baltimore Ravens' five-time Pro Bowl kicker Justin Tucker broke an NFL record by making a 66-yard field goal. The second longest ever is a 64-yarder made by the Denver Broncos' Matt Prater.

Butker, 27, has demonstrated his power on kickoffs, forcing touchbacks 68.8 percent of the time. On Wednesday, he told the Star that he adjusted his technique in the offseason and he's ready to show off more power on field goals too.

"I've always swung really hard, but the ball hasn't necessarily gone as far as I feel like it should for a guy that's 6'4 and I think relatively explosive," Butker said. "I think kickoffs, my leg power really shows, but on field goals, I think I've just changed some technique stuff so I'm even more efficient."

Butker has made 146 of his 162 career field goal attempts and 20 of his 28 tries from at least 50 yards out.
