Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides injury update on All-Pro before Super Bowl LVIII

The Kansas City Chiefs could be without one of their best players in Super Bowl LVIII.

Per ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid called it a "long shot" for first-team All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney to play Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. The 31-year-old suffered a pectoral injury in the divisional round against the Buffalo Bills and missed the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens.

On Monday, Thuney told NFL Media's Ian Rapoport he's unsure whether he'll practice Wednesday and is "taking it day by day."

As of Tuesday, FanDuel lists the 49ers as a 2.5-point favorite. Assuming Thuney doesn't play, pulling off the upset will be more difficult for the Chiefs. Pro Football Focus recently gave him a 74.9 grade, tied for the ninth at his position. PFF ranked the Chiefs offensive line as the 18th best in the NFL.

Nick Allegretti filled in for Thuney against Baltimore. In the 17-10 victory, Kansas City allowed two sacks, averaged 4.4 yards per play and converted 8-of-18 third-down attempts.

The 49ers could exploit this weakness. San Francisco is third in the NFL in points allowed (18.4). After an underwhelming regular season, 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa is kicking it up a notch in the playoffs. The 2022 Defensive Player of the Year is tied for third in the postseason in sacks (two) and has 15 pressures, via CBS Sports.

Kansas City will need its stellar defense to step up again if its offense struggles without Thuney. The Chiefs have allowed 13.6 points per game in the playoffs. That's a massive challenge, though, as San Francisco is second in the league in points scored (28.9).
