Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes apologizes to fantasy football players about WR uncertainty

Patrick Mahomes was recently named the top player at his position by CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin ahead of Sunday's regular-season opener at the Arizona Cardinals. But the star quarterback isn't entering the season without some uncertainty following his club's offseason trade of wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins.

While Mahomes still has All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce as a weapon, he also has free-agent acquisitions JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Justin Watson among his new teammates. The 26-year-old spoke with reporters Wednesday and suggested the Chiefs don't have a typical WR1 who should be a mainstay in fantasy football lineups.

"The biggest thing is there's going to be a different player every single game that has the big game," Mahomes explained, according to Adam Teicher of ESPN. "It's not going to be just necessarily Tyreek and Travis [Kelce] every single week, where it's like one or the other having a big game or both. Every single week, it's going to be someone different."

Mahomes then offered an apology to fans looking to set their fantasy lineups ahead of the season's first weekend.

"So I'm sorry to all you fantasy football guys. It's going to come from everywhere, so you're going to have to kind of choose the right guy every week," he said.

Teicher pointed out that Mahomes completed 18 passes to 10 different players during the preseason. As noted by ESPN stats, Kelce finished last season second on the team behind Hill with 92 catches for 1,125 yards. Both Kelce and Hill tallied nine touchdown receptions.

"Obviously, Travis is going to probably have a lot of catches. That's just who he is," Mahomes added during his comments. "Other than that, it's going to come from the whole group and I think the guys have kind of embraced that...That's what you want on a team and as an offense."
