The Kansas City Chiefs are reinforcing their depth at the defensive tackle position by bringing in an old friend.

According to the NFL's personnel notice for Tuesday, the Chiefs are bringing back DT Mike Pennel. He originally joined the Chiefs back in October of 2019 and played a pivotal role in the resurgence on the defensive side of the ball that the team saw en route to their win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.

Pennel would return to Kansas City in 2020, but he was suspended for the first two games to start the season. The Topeka, KS native has since spent time with the Chicago Bears and the Atlanta Falcons.

The Chiefs quietly lack some depth at the defensive tackle position. The team was hoping to get Keondre Coburn back on the practice squad after he was waived last week. He was claimed by the Denver Broncos, which ultimately paved the way for Pennel's return.

In two seasons in Kansas City, Pennel appeared in 22 regular-season games with one start. He recorded 53 total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, and three quarterback hits in that span. He also appeared in six playoff games with two starts, recording eight total tackles and a QB hit.

Chiefs DT Chris Jones casually recruited Pennel back to Kansas City during the offseason. Color him as one of the players who will be most excited by the news of Pennel's return. Pennel has also clearly stated his desire to come back, though it might be motivated more by his stomach.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs released WR Daniel Arias from the practice squad. Arias was signed to the practice squad in late September.
