Chris Johnson: ‘I think it’s a bad idea for Titans to go into rebuilding mode’

Although there have been conflicting reports on the future of Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry, former Titans great Chris Johnson believes the team should be adding pieces around Henry and not shopping him.

In a recent video analysis for The 33rd Team, Johnson made the case for the Titans to plug a few holes to give Henry some help rather than tear it all down and restart from scratch.

“I think if we just add a couple pieces, we will be able to win our division and give us a shot at the playoffs, the championship,” Johnson said. “I feel like if we add a quarterback that can throw the ball (all) over the field, that will help us back some guys out of the box on Derrick Henry and we don’t have to give him the ball 30 times a game. I feel like receiver — if we bring in a big-time receiver and we get a quarterback, then [we’re] right there. I don’t think it’s time to go into a full rebuild for Tennessee.”

It’s been speculated that the Titans could move on from quarterback Ryan Tannehill and his $36.6 million cap hit during the offseason. Tennessee is also likely in the market for another receiver or two after parting ways with Robert Woods and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine not accepting the team’s restricted free agent tender.

Returning from a broken foot the previous season, Henry silenced any doubts about whether he could still be effective. The 29-year-old tailback ran for 1,538 yards and 13 touchdowns — both second-most in the NFL in 2022 — while setting career highs in receptions (33), targets (41) and receiving yards (398).

Mike Silver of Bally Sports recently reported that he was told by general managers at the NFL Combine that the Titans were shopping Henry. Multiple reports, however, have said the Titans were listening on Henry but not actively shopping him.
