Cleveland Browns made an interesting decision on a free agent that no one had happening.
Former Baltimore Ravens QB Tyler Huntley agreed to a one-year deal with the Browns. This comes just days after the Browns agreed to a deal with Jameis Winston.
Huntley comes over to the Browns after spending the last four seasons with the Ravens and being Lamar Jackson’s backup. Huntley was named as a Pro Bowler in 2022 life making just four starts.
Why did the Browns sign a fourth quarterback in Tyler Huntley?
Cleveland went through the offseason last year with four quarterbacks after they drafted Dorian Thompson-Robinson. They had Deshaun Watson, Joshua Dobbs, and Kellen Mond joining him on the roster. With Deshaun Watson returning from injury, it makes sense to have three quarterbacks ready to go in OTAs and into training camp.
Watson is expected to begin throwing this month and to be ready to go for the 2024 season. In the last two seasons, the Browns have just 12 games with Watson in uniform. Season No. 3 is going to be very important for what they hope is for him to get on track.
Signing Huntley gives them another quarterback if there is any setback in recovery and someone who brings the dual-threat ability that fits the offense.
Cleveland very well could move Huntley in a trade if a need for a quarterback comes up in training camp. Just like when they sent Dobbs to the Minnesota Vikings for a fifth-round pick before the start of the regular season last year.
As it currently stands, the Browns have four quarterbacks that could step in and give them snaps. It isn’t going to stay that way into the season, but that far out will have to play out itself.
