After an offseason largely focused on defensive moves, the Cleveland Browns are refining the offense.

Tight ends, who are a key component of Coach Stefanski’s offensive scheme, have been the focus of the past couple of days.

Yesterday, the Browns released Kyle Markway who spent most of last season on the Browns practice squad.

Markway was one of two roster players that worked out with the Browns rookies at last week’s minicamp.

Today, the Browns sign tight end Connor Davis.

With the signing of Davis, the Browns roster currently has 90 players.

Who Is Connor Davis?

Davis, 26, is a 6’7″ 280 pound player who spent last season on the New York Jets practice squad.

He was waived by the Jets on May 7.

Prior to that, he was on the roster of the XFL’s St. Louis BattleHawks in 2019 and the Alliance of American Football’s Birmingham Iron in 2020.

Davis played college football at Stony Brook University (New York).

In addition to playing as a tight end at Stony Brook, he also sporadically lined up as an offensive tackle and defensive end.

Browns Tight End Roster

Cleveland once again has five tight ends on the roster.

In addition to Davis, they have David Njoku, Austin Hooper, Harrison Bryant, and Stephen Carlson.

Njoku, Hooper, and Bryant were the primary players in 2020; Stephen Carlson appeared in only two games and had one reception for 11 yards.

Hooper and Bryant are starting their second year with the Browns and did well to build chemistry with Baker Mayfield in the pandemic-shortened preseason of 2020.

David Njoku enters his fifth year with the Browns and is playing under the fifth-year option of his rookie contract; he is slated to be a free agent after the 2021 season.

As of now, it looks as though Davis is the replacement player for Markway, but no one is saying what prompted the change.
