The Cleveland Browns have opted to waive quarterback Kellen Mond ahead of their final preseason game versus the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday. Nearly one year after the Browns picked him up off of waivers from the Minnesota Vikings, they’re moving on from the former third-round draft pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The deadline for teams to reduce rosters from 90 to 53 men comes in five days on Aug. 29. After the initial cut, teams will then designate an additional 16 players for the practice squad.

Kellen Mond hadn’t played in a regular season game for the Browns yet. In fact, his only regular-season appearance came in his rookie season with the Vikings. He had two completions on three pass attempts.

He had played okay in Minnesota’s 2022 preseason games, though, with no real flashes. Mond threw for a 56.9% completion percentage for 303 yards and a pair of touchdowns. In the end, it wasn’t enough to keep his spot on the roster.

Minnesota drafted Mond in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft after four years in College Station. During his career at Texas A&M, Mond threw for over 9,600 yards and rushed for an additional 1,609. He totaled 71 touchdowns with his arm and 22 more with his legs.

During the preseason so far for the Browns, Mond had 297 passing yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Overall, he went 32-for-55.

Releasing Mond means the Browns will move ahead with Deshaun Watson, Joshua Dobbs and rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Cleveland signed Dobbs to a one-year, $2 million deal in March and drafted Thompson-Robinson in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

The rookie quarterback out of UCLA is 30-for-46 in three preseason games. He’s accumulated 348 yards with two touchdowns. Dobbs is 8-for-16 with 77 yards and an interception.
