Colin Cowherd wants to see Baker Mayfield as a college football announcer

Colin Cowherd doesn't think that highly of Baker Mayfield the quarterback. If you've listened to Cowherd anytime since Mayfield was drafted No. 1 overall by the Cleveland Browns in 2018, that would be clear.

Cowherd didn't think Mayfield was worth the No. 1 overall pick then, and frankly, he was right. Cleveland proved Cowherd's opinions true by trading Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers for a 2024 conditional fifth-round pick.

That doesn't mean Cowherd thinks Mayfield is useless to the sport of football though. Sure, he's already bench-worthy in Carolina and he may be doomed to a career as a backup quarterback if things don't turn around quickly, but the bombastic sports talk personality can see another way to relevancy for Mayfield.

“If I owned a network, I’d put Baker on as a college football announcer tomorrow,” Cowherd said on his show in a discussion about whether Mayfield would accept life as an NFL backup or could perhaps look to the television booth as a second chance (h/t AwfulAnnouncing).

“Absolutely. Tomorrow! Now he’s not [Joel] Klatt or [Kirk] Herbstreit, but I would put him on a college game. He’s got huge credibility collegiately, he’s totally outspoken.”

Cowherd is right. Mayfield does have a ton of credibility in the world of college football. He may be a total bust as a top NFL draft pick, but his story in college is unbeatable. From walk-on to Heisman Trophy winner, Mayfield is the real deal in those ranks. As Cowherd also pointed out, we also know the former Oklahoma quarterback isn't afraid to show some personality.

“I think Baker Mayfield, tomorrow, as a college football analyst, I think he’d be in the No. 2 booth within two years,” Cowherd said. “He loves Oklahoma football, he has unbelievable passion for it. There’s nothing wrong with that. He doesn’t need the money. He could be a huge star as a broadcaster."

It will be interesting to see how this season plays out for Mayfield. Without a doubt, though, the broadcasting world would be a great fit.
