Colts' Anthony Richardson discusses Super Bowl expectations

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is remaining realistic about what he will and won't achieve during his rookie season. 

"Everybody wants me to come here and win a Super Bowl my first year," Richardson said Monday, per Mike Chappell of FOX59. "I wish I could, and I hope I can. But sometimes, you’ve got to understand it’s not all about me. (I’m) making sure everybody on this team is involved and everybody is doing their job because I’m not the only one here." 

Richardson recorded just 13 college starts with the Florida Gators and completed only 53.8% of his passes last season. However, the 21-year-old wowed teams with his performance at the scouting combine, and Indianapolis ultimately used the fourth overall pick to grab who they hope will be a long-term franchise quarterback. 

Former Colts punter and current media superstar Pat McAfee raised eyebrows when he said last week that Richardson is "gonna lead us to a Super Bowl." Richardson suggested on Monday he has plenty of work to accomplish to reach such a level. 

"I need to push myself and not get complacent," Richardson explained. "I can be complacent, saying, 'Oh, I’m in the NFL now. I made it.' But that’s not the case. I haven’t done anything yet, and I need to establish myself in this league and on this team and just push us to get victories." 

Head coach Shane Steichen named Richardson the starter after a single preseason appearance, and the first-year pro completed 13 of 29 pass attempts (44.8%) for 145 yards with no touchdowns and one interception during the exhibition portion of the calendar. Richardson hinted Monday he doesn't feel as if he has to put the Colts on his back so early into his career. 

"People always talk about how I’m the franchise," Richardson remarked. "I see it that way, but (teammates) are here before I was here. They’re part of the franchise as well." 

Richardson is a raw talent who will likely lose more than he wins as a rookie. How he handles these setbacks will help determine if he's all the Colts hope he is.
