Colts' Carson Wentz 'optimistic' about starting Week 1 vs. Seahawks

New Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback Carson Wentz underwent "very successful" foot surgery to repair an issue Aug. 2 and, more recently, was activated off the reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday as he attempts to prepare for the regular-season opener against the Seattle Seahawks at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sept. 12.

According to JJ Stankevitz of the Colts' website, Wentz seems confident he'll be cleared to play two Sundays from now.

"I'm optimistic, but again, we'll see," he said of his potential availability for that game when speaking with reporters. "It's going to come down to how the doctors feel, where I'm at and everything. But just being out there full pads today, taking a handful of reps was definitely a step in the right direction."

Colts head coach Frank Reich added the plan is for Wentz to be evaluated after Monday's practice and then be a full participant two days later.

"I think it's generally safe to say that if we come in here and Carson is taking most of the reps on Wednesday, the intention is that he's going to play," Reich explained. "And that the only thing that would inhibit that would be if all of a sudden Thursday there was some kind of setback. We gotta wait and see."

If Wentz can't go for whatever reason on Sept. 12, 2020 fourth-round draft pick Jacob Eason would start versus Seattle.
