Rather than immediately undergoing surgery, Carson Wentz will try to rest and rehab his foot first. Marc Lebryk-USA TODAY Sports

New Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz suffered what seemed to be a serious foot injury during the latter stages of training-camp practice this past Thursday.

Wentz, 28, felt a twinge in his foot as he was planting to throw. He immediately exited the practice field to get more tests.

Initial indications were that Wentz would need to undergo surgery involving a bone and ligament. After acquiring him in a blockbuster trade with the Philadelphia Eagles early in the offseason, this is the last thing Indianapolis wanted to hear.

For now, there’s some confidence that Wentz could actually be on the field when Indianapolis opens its season Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the former Pro Bowl signal-caller will try rest and rehab over the next few days. If all goes according to plan, he’d avoid surgery and potentially be able to go Week 1. If not, surgery and a long-term absence will be in the cards.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback situation and Carson Wentz injury

If Wentz is sidelined for the long haul, there’s a decent chance that Indianapolis will look at the trade market for a short-term upgrade. Chicago Bears backup Nick Foles has a relationship with Colts head coach Frank Reich dating back to their days together with the Philadelphia Eagles. Jimmy Garoppolo becomes an option given reports regarding the performance of rookie Trey Lance in San Francisco 49ers training camp.

In-house options include 2020 fourth-round pick Jacob Eason as well as rookie Sam Ehlinger. Indianapolis also signed veteran Brett Hundley once news of Wentz’s injury became public record.
