It’s no secret that the Indianapolis Colts had a brutal trifecta of quarterbacks for the entire 2022 season. At the time, it consisted of Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger, and Nick Foles.

Below is a brief breakdown of touchdown passes to interceptions for each quarterback.

  • Matt Ryan: 12 games, 14 TDs/13 INTs
  • Sam Ehlinger: 4 games, 3 TDs/3 INTs
  • Nick Foles: 3 games, 0 TDs/4 INTs

With those metrics alone, there was an unacceptable 17 touchdowns to 20 interceptions for starting Colts QBs. With that bad of a year, it segues into the subject of this piece.

Recently, Pro Football Focus’ Zoltán Buday put together the “Weakest NFL Positions Groups” piece highlighting the biggest needs ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft for six different teams. The Colts qualified for the worst at the most crucial position.

For the Colts’ entry, Buday doesn’t hold back:

“Indianapolis has three quarterbacks who started games in 2022; however, neither Nick Foles, Gardner Minshew, nor Sam Ehlinger played very well when they were thrown into action last year. Foles turned 34 years old in January and had two pretty rough outings when he was on to the field, earning 42.9 and 30.5 grades in his two starts for the Colts. Minshew had to step in to replace an injured Jalen Hurts toward the end of the season, and while he played relatively well in Philadelphia’s loss to Dallas, his 35.4 grade against the New Orleans Saints in Week 17 was a big reason why the Eagles only scored 10 points in that game. Finally, Ehlinger started three games for the Colts in 2022 and saved the best for last, as he earned a 63.5 PFF grade when he started the last game of the season against the Houston Texans. However, he still only earned a 57.2 grade on the season and has played just 239 snaps in the NFL so far.”

Once the aforementioned Ryan was let go by Indianapolis, Minshew was signed to the team after new Colts head coach Shane Steichen was hired.

Of all of the QBs in this piece, Minshew was arguably the most reliable. With the most significant position in the NFL being so low for the Colts in 2022, securing a solid pick in the upcoming NFL draft is more important than ever.

The Colts may have landed in an unenviable position on this list from PFF, but, with the new leadership of the QB guru, Steichen, it could swing in the opposite direction with the correct planning, especially with a reliable veteran mentor in the building like Minshew.
