Colts place QB Carson Wentz, two others on reserve/COVID-19 list

The Indianapolis Colts have placed quarterback Carson Wentz on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced Monday. Center Ryan Kelly and wide receiver Zach Pascal were also placed on the list.

It's unclear which player, if any, tested positive for COVID-19.

The news is particularly a rough hit for Wentz, who has missed the majority of training camp after undergoing foot surgery earlier this month. He participated in individual drills last week and did some 7-on-7 work.

Wentz was supposed to return to full team practice Monday. Now he'll have to wait longer to get back on the field. If he tested positive for COVID-19, he'll be sidelined for at least 10 days with a return date of Sept. 9.

Colts head coach Frank Reich told reporters Monday that this week would be "big" for Wentz to determine where he's at leading up to Week 1, according to NFL.com.

"We've got to see how (Wentz) responds to going one day in team," Reich said. "Then the next day will be a walk-through. So kind of give him and Quenton a chance to have a day there. Then we have a day in pads on Wednesday and then another shorter practice on Thursday.

"This will be a big week to determine where those two guys are, but they will be in team (drills). We'll see if they are limited or not or if they are full-go for every rep. We'll see how it goes during practice."

The Colts open the 2021 season against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 12. If Wentz is unable to play, second-year quarterback Jacob Eason will get the start as Sam Ehlinger is also sidelined with a sprained knee.
