The Indianapolis Colts have brought on veteran defensive tackle Ross Blacklock to the practice squad.

With this addition to the practice squad, it meant that safety Henry Black would be released to make room for Blacklock.

Given that the Colts are without starting defensive tackle Grover Stewart for the next five games (suspension) and depth tackle Eric Johnson II is dealing with an ankle injury, this makes perfect sense to prioritize the defensive interior over safety.

If Johnson misses time, then it’s Taven Bryan and the rookie Adetomiwa Adebawore who are next in line. Both are highly athletic and specialize in pass-rushing, but are weaker in run defense. There’s also a shot that defensive ends Dayo Odeyingbo and Tyquan Lewis get thrown into the interior for some snaps, as both have already played tackle at times this season.

Blacklock brings experience and has started three games in his four years as a pro. The former Houston Texans second-round selection could be elevated to the active roster at some point if injuries continue or even Johnson can’t go. Having depth on the defensive side of the ball is key, especially on the line and front.

Through 41 career games, Blacklock has 38 tackles (5 for loss), 3.0 sacks, and 9 QB hits. As is with many opportunities in the NFL, this injury to Johnson and suspension for Stewart could give someone like Blacklock a chance to get more snaps and potentially earn a spot in a thin position right now for the Colts.
