Commanders add to underwhelming offseason with latest coaching staff hire

The Commanders continued their underwhelming offseason on Thursday by hiring former Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson for a role as an offensive assistant.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported the addition, the latest questionable decision by Washington's front office.

The organization, having whiffed on Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, settled on former Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who infamously blew a 28-3 lead as head coach of the Falcons in Super Bowl LI.

Or, if you are to believe the Commanders' side of the story, they planned a flight to Detroit just to tell Johnson they weren't interested in him.

Then, the Commanders decided not to retain Eric Bieniemy, who led people to believe Sam Howell was a legitimate starter ("He's hands down better than Brock Purdy," said former NFL starting quarterback Shaun King) at one point this season, instead hiring former Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury as offensive coordinator.

In four seasons in Arizona, Kingsbury's offenses never cracked the top 10 in scoring. People also began questioning if Kyler Murray was a true franchise quarterback by the end of his tenure.

Fowler notes Johnson is likely to take the pass game coordinator role in Washington. To his credit, Johnson was a rising star before this season after spending 2021 and 2022 as the Eagles quarterbacks coach.

Before that, he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Florida, where he coached 2020 Heisman finalist Kyle Trask.

Johnson was heavily criticized in his lone season as Philly's offensive coordinator, his play-calling drawing the ire of Eagles fans with the heavy use of wide receiver screens and quarterback draws.

Like Quinn and Kingsbury, Johnson has something to prove, making him a fitting yet unexciting addition.
