Commanders' Antonio Gandy-Golden retiring after two NFL seasons
The Washington Commanders' 2020 fourth-round pick Antonio Gandy-Golden is retiring after two NFL seasons and intends to go back to school, head coach Ron Rivera announced Thursday.
Gandy-Golden, 24, played wide receiver at Liberty, where he finished with 3,722 yards and 32 touchdowns in four seasons. In two seasons with the Commanders, he caught just one pass for three yards. Earlier this offseason, he began a transition to tight end with Rivera saying that the bulked-up version of Gandy-Golden had an opportunity to be a contributor for the Washington offense.
"Antonio and I had a conversation this morning and he's going to retire from football," Rivera said Thursday. "He just felt the time was now. He is going to go back to school; he told me he wants to continue his education and then go from there. He's a heck of a young man, he did a nice job for us. We really do appreciate who he is and who he was for us as a football player and as a young man. And because he's a bright young man I do believe he has a bright future ahead of him."
Gandy-Golden was a graphic design major at Liberty and developed a reputation as a renaissance man, capable of everything from solving a Rubik's cube to bowling a 300.
In addition to starter Logan Thomas, the Commanders also have 2021 fourth-round pick John Bates and 2020 fifth-round pick Cole Turner at tight end.
