Commanders' Carson Wentz not 'overly concerned' with Ron Rivera's comments

After Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera tried to clarify the perceived shot he took at starting quarterback Carson Wentz following Sunday's loss to the Tennessee Titans, Wentz indicated he spoke to his head coach and is not bothered by Rivera's words.

"… coach addressed it, handled it — nothing, for me, that I’m overly concerned about,” Wentz explained, as shared by Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "Coach is a very straightforward, up-front guy. He addressed it in the team meeting, which I thought was really cool, and what he meant by it all. So I feel very confident in that."

Rivera raised eyebrows Monday when he said that "quarterback" is the reason his team is currently dead last in the NFC East standings. The coach clarified on Tuesday he meant the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants have signal-callers atop their depth charts familiar with those offensive systems, while Wentz only joined Washington in March.

"Yeah, I wish I had all the answers on that," Wentz responded Tuesday when asked why he believes the Commanders are in the basement of the overall NFL standings. "I think there’s a lot of football left. There’s a lot of varying factors across our division, which is obviously a very good division at this point in the season. At the same time, I know there’s a lot of ball left. And we talked about it after the game, unfortunately, we kind of dug ourselves a little bit of a hole."

According to ESPN stats, Wentz is 18th among eligible quarterbacks with an 86.0 passer rating, 24th with a 38.2 total QBR, 20th with a 62.9% completion percentage and fifth with 1,390 yards through the air this season. He's thrown 10 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Wentz and the Commanders next play at the 2-3 Chicago Bears on Thursday night.
