With Dan Snyder cast away from the NFL and ownership of the Washington Commanders, the possibility of new owner Josh Harris changing the team name has once again surfaced.
Shortly after NFL owners unanimously approved the $6.05 billion sale of the Commanders, ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. opened the door towards yet another name change when asked by Rich Eisen on the Rich Eisen Show.
“I think so, yes,” Van Natta replied. “I think there’s a pretty good chance of that to erase any part of the Snyder legacy; to have a complete do-over. I would not be surprised at all, Rich, to see a name change and a complete re-branding.”
The Commanders were the Washington Redskins from 1937 through the 2019 season. Snyder and his contingent retired the moniker. Sponsors and groups of Indengous people pushed Snyder to change the name. Opponents felt the name was disparaging and racist to Native Americans.
For now, thoughts of another name change are just speculation. However, an ownership change is a perfect opportunity to move on from a name that has been chastised by the national media as well.
After a two-year stint as the Washington Football Team, Commanders were revealed as the team’s new name in February 2022. Fans were disappointed by the choice. Commanders seemed like a huge letdown following an outcry for Red Wolves, Red Tails, and Warriors. Others didn’t agree with a name change in the first place, holding on to the tradition of the previous name.
The Commanders’ name latches onto Snyder and his dreadful legacy. In order for Harris to move completely from Snyder, changing the name may be part of the swiping.
If Harris and his limited partners decide to change the name, they’ll have to wait a bit. According to Jake Russell of The Washington Post, the earliest the Washington franchise can change its name is 2025.
“The team would have to file written notice and details of proposed changes to the league by March 1, 2024, and after a series of steps, get approval from the league by Dec. 1, 2024,” Russell explained.
