The Washington Commanders made two roster moves Monday a day before their three-day minicamp begins. Washington waived defensive back Will Adams and kicker Brian Johnson, the team announced.

Johnson kicked three games for Washington last season while fellow Virginia Tech product Joey Slye was out with a hamstring injury. Johnson made 2-of-2 field goals, including a long of 52 yards. He also made 4-of-5 extra points.

Washington placed an exclusive rights tender on Johnson in March. However, the team signed Slye to a two-year deal a month later. Johnson’s release leaves the Commanders with one kicker.

Will Adams starred at inaugural HBCU Combine

Meanwhile, Adams became a notable name after shining at the inaugural HBCU Combine in January. The Commanders signed him in May as an undrafted free agent out of Division II’s Virginia State.

At 6-foot-1, 225 pounds Adams’ measures grabbed observers attention along with his 4.57 40-yard dash. Commanders head coach Ron Rivera previously told WTVR in Richmond, Adams had “untapped potential.”

Specifics of his release are unknown. However, the Commanders appear set at safety, primary position Adams is slated as a pro. The team has veterans Bobby McCain, Kam Curl and Jeremy Reaves at the top of the depth chart. Additionally, the team selected Percy Butler out of Louisiana in the fourth round of this year’s draft.
