Commanders GM updates fans on star DT's trade chatter

Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters said Monday that the team is " not interested " in trading star defensive tackle Jonathan Allen.

Peters' words are notable because when Allen was asked in December if he ever thinks about leaving the organization, he answered, "1,000%."

This came after the 29-year-old made his frustration with the direction of the team obvious multiple times during the 2023 season.

Following Washington's loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 5 on "Thursday Night Football," Allen agreed with part-owner Magic Johnson as well as a host of teammates in criticizing the team's performance, saying, "We got our [butts] kicked."

After the Commanders' defeat against the New York Giants in Week 7, Allen said, "I'm [expletive] tired of this [expletive]. I'm [expletive] tired of this bull[expletive]. It's been seven [expletive] years of the same [expletive]. I'm tired of this [expletive]."

Washington selected the linesman out of the University of Alabama with the 17th overall pick in 2017.

Allen made back-to-back Pro Bowls in 2021 and 2022 and led the Commanders in quarterback hits (19) last season while finishing second in sacks (5.5) and tied for second in tackles for loss (10).

He's had great individual success with Washington, but the franchise hasn't had a winning season during Allen's career and made the playoffs just once. The Commanders won the NFC East in 2020 with a 7-9 record and then lost in the wild-card round against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Star teammates Chase Young and Montez Sweat were traded to the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears last fall, respectively, but Allen remains in the nation's capital, for now.
