Commanders HC Ron Rivera: Jack Del Rio apology to team 'well-received'

One week after his controversial tweet comparing protests following the killing of George Floyd with the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol Insurrection, Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio met with the team on Tuesday to apologize for his recent comments.

One day after his tweet, in talking with reporters, the former head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and then-Oakland Raiders further created a stir with comments regarding the early-2021 riot, referring to the event as a "dust-up".

Del Rio apologized later that day, but last Friday, Commanders head coach Ron Rivera handed down a $100k fine to the coordinator. On Sunday, Del Rio deleted his Twitter account and on Tuesday, Rivera addressed the media to talk about the matter.

The Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection committee hearings began last week and continued on Monday. Del Rio is beginning his third season as the defensive coordinator with Washington.

The Commanders opened up their three-day mandatory minicamp on Tuesday.
