Washington Commanders running back Antonio Gibson Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Commanders will be without one-half of its formidable backfield on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Commanders running back Antonio Gibson has been ruled out for the game.

Gibson did not practice this week. He is dealing with a foot sprain and ankle injury.

As a result, rookie running back Brian Robinson is in line for a heavier load against the Browns. While his role has altered with Robinson’s emergence as the lead back, Gibson maintained double-digit carries in games until a foot injury that popped up after a Week 12 game against Atlanta.

In the last four games, Gibson has been limited to 28 carries. However, he has served as the third-down back and receiving threat.

Jonathan Williams is expected to spell Robinson in Gibson’s absence.

Running back isn’t the only role Washington will miss Gibson. In recent weeks, Gibson has been the primary kick returner. He is averaging 23.1 yards per return. Dax Milne, who serves as the punt returner, is expected to fill in on kickoffs.
