The Commanders could be getting reinforcement soon. Washington safety Kamren Curl has been cleared to return, according to ESPN’s John Keim. Curl was getting fitted for a splint on his injured thumb.

Curl injured his thumb in the Commanders’ second preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He underwent surgery shortly afterward. As a result, the third-year pro missed the first two games of the season.

Darrick Forrest started in Curl’s place. Forrest had an impressive showing in Washington’s Week 1 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, delivering a huge hit and snagging the game-clinching interception. He led the team with eight solo tackles in the Commanders’ Week 2 loss to the Detroit Lions.

But, Curl’s absence loomed large, particularly at the line of scrimmage. Through two weeks, the Commanders have allowed 29.0 points per game (tied for 27th in the NFL) and 404 yards per game (tied for 25th).

Prior to this season, Curl emerged as Washington’s most reliable safety. He’s versatile as he can play the Buffalo Nickel, slot corner and strong safety.

Last season, Curl had 99 tackles, five passes defended, one sack and a fumble recovery. His presence will allow defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio to deploy his three-safety looks with Curl, Forrest and free safety Bobby McCain. It’s a similar defense that Washington used a year ago with Landon Collins playing alongside Curl and McCain.

It would be great if Curl plays this week. The Commanders host the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles. Philadelphia has the league’s top-ranked offense through two weeks. Led by quarterback Jalen Hurts, the Eagles average 475 yards, including 189.5 rushing yards per game.
