Commanders' Sam Howell, Jacoby Brissett open up about competition

Washington Commanders quarterbacks Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett are competing for the starting job but also worked well together during springtime practices.

"Jacoby's awesome. Me and him have become really good friends, and he's just a great guy," Howell said about Brissett, per Zach Selby of the Commanders' website. "He's been through so much in his career. He's seen a lot. He's spent some time with a lot of different teams. He was in New England for a long time with (Tom Brady). He just has so many stories and so much insight that he can share. He's been great to have here and he helps a lot."

Brissett entered the NFL as a third-round pick in 2016 and most recently started 11 games with the Cleveland Browns last season. He suggested earlier this month he "wouldn’t be" with Washington if he didn't think he'd receive a legitimate chance to start. Since he made those comments, Commanders wide receiver Jahan Dotson declared that he believes "Howell's gonna be our guy," and NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated subsequently reported that the 2022 fifth-round choice has a "significant" lead over Brissett in a quarterback battle that may already be settled.

"He understands that, I understand that," Brissett said about not relinquishing the QB1 gig to Howell without a fight. "The whole team understands that for their position. I think it's been going well."

The Commanders open the preseason at the Browns on Aug. 11. It remains to be seen how the two signal-callers will split snaps during that contest and across the following two exhibition matchups.

"He's smart, can make all the throws," Brissett added about Howell. "Been a joy to be around. I know that makes me sound old, but he's been good to be around [and] learn from each other. Competing against each other has just been a lot of fun."

It makes sense that head coach Ron Rivera wants Howell to cement himself as the team's starter for 2023 and beyond well before the preseason ends. If, however, the 22-year-old stumbles, Brissett will be ready to once again serve as a bridge option at the sport's most important position.
