The J.J. McCarthy hype is real.
And the Washington Commanders have serious interest in the national champion.
Per Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz, Washington will fly out to Ann Arbor to wine and dine McCarthy the night before his Pro Day on March 22.
Outside of Caleb Williams, the Commanders have their pick of the litter between Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and McCarthy - the top QBs in what is a very solid and deep class. This is obviously Adam Peters and Dan Quinn doing their due diligence on top of visiting a Pro Day loaded with talent. Still, it's a nice investment that shows they are interested in more than just chatting it up with McCarthy.
McCarthy's draft stock has been attached to a jetpack, lately, as more and more teams fall in love with his intangibles and clutch factor. There are physical limitations to his game, but as we've seen with Brock Purdy, it doesn't really matter as long as the system fits a QB's strengths (although the Purdy example is a slippery slope, but I digress).
Washington made several key moves in free agency to shore up multiple roster holes and it even signed veteran quarterback and former second overall pick, Marcus Mariota, to a one-year deal worth $6 million. But, all of the moves, especially the Mariota one, won't preclude the team from taking a quarterback at No. 2 overall. In fact, it would be an objective shock if the team didn't take a QB after trading Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks.
Obviously, McCarthy is an option. And we'll find out what happens, soon enough.
