The Washington Commanders activated tight end Logan Thomas off the physically unable to perform list two weeks ago. The thought process behind the transaction appeared Thomas would be able to play within the first four weeks of the regular season. However, he remains unsure if he’ll be able to play in Sunday’s Week 1 contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Thomas says he is building to playing either against the Jaguars or the following week at the Detroit Lions. He is coming off a serious knee injury in which he tore his ACL, MCL, and meniscus in Week 13 of last season.

“Still feel things here and there, but not anything that affects the way I play,” Thomas said, per ESPN’s John Keim.

Thomas is progressing. But, the Commanders have a great deal of depth at tight end. They could afford to hold off Thomas. Washington has John Bates, this year’s fifth-round draft pick Cole Turner and undrafted rookie Armani Rogers.

After converting from quarterback to tight end in 2016, Thomas got his first chance to start in the NFL with Washington in 2020. He blossomed with 72 catches for 670 yards and six touchdowns. Last year, he was limited to six games, 18 catches, 196 yards, and three touchdowns. He battled a hamstring injury as well.

If healthy, Thomas could be in line for a huge role within the offense. New quarterback Carson Wentz has the league’s second-highest rate of targeting tight ends since 2017.
