The Washington Commanders entered training camp in hopes of looking at their young linebackers to add depth to the position. One week through camp, the Commanders have now lost two undrafted rookie linebackers.

Tre Walker decided to retire, head coach Ron Rivera announced Friday.

Washington already lost Drew White, an undrafted rookie out of Notre Dame, to a torn ACL on Tuesday. The Commanders waived White with an injury designation.

Walker had 105 tackles in 11 games during his last season at the University of Idaho. He signed with the Commanders shortly after going undrafted in this past draft.

Washington has avoided signing a veteran linebacker to slot behind starters Cole Holcomb and Jamin Davis. Instead, they wanted to take a in-depth look at their in-house options. Khaleke Hudson and David Mayo seem cemented as the next two linebackers, even if it’s by default.

Walker is the second Commanders player to retire since training camp started. Last week, tight end Antonio Gandy-Golden retired to go back to school.

Rivera says having multiple players retire during training camp is not uncommon.

“Oh yeah, it happens,” Rivera said.
