Corey DavisDecision to walk away from football at 28 years old came as a shock to Jets fans today and will now open the door for some of the younger pass catchers on the Jets roster with undrafted free agent Jason Brownlee leading the way.

Up to this point there has been plenty of talk about Brownlee or fellow undrafted free agent Xavier Gipson finding a way to steal a roster spot with strong pre-season performances.  Gipson has done more as a return man while Brownlee has looked like the better receiver up to this point.  In Gang Green’s most recent contest, Brownlee led all receivers with 4 receptions for 50 yards while Gipson has a 45 yard kick return and 31 yard punt return.

As we heard the Jets brass mention on episode two of Hard Knocks, Brownlee had enough talent in the eyes of the Jets to be a starting boundary receiver one day whose talent could justify using a third-round draft choice on.

If the Jets are hoping to replace Davis with a player who is more similar to his size and play style, expect Brownlee to get the nod.  However, if the goal is to add a quicker, more explosive slot type of receiver who can double as a return man, Gipson has an edge.

Also worth mentioning is the presence of Irv Charles and Malik Taylor.  Charles is the biggest of the four pass catchers at 6′ 4” 219 while Taylor has some history with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay.
