The New England Patriots are in for a huge rebuild for years to come after the firing of long-time head coach Bill Belichick. With the new hiring of head coach Jerod Mayo and key players likely to sign with new teams this offseason, the team will have a ton of cap space to work with. With the team likely to draft a quarterback or sign a veteran in free agency, they will need to add more weapons to the receiving corps. Speculation by analysts has a receiver worth at least $18 million signing with New England this offseason, and it could be a huge step in their rebuilding process.

New England Patriots Favored To Land Star Receiver

The Patriots are the favorites to sign star Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Calvin Ridley this offseason. Ridley has solidified himself as a true threat in the NFL since entering the league in 2018. He has amounted to 4,358 receiving yards, 324 catches, and 36 touchdowns in his successful career.

Veteran Presence

Ridley, who spent most of his career with the Atlanta Falcons, posted a 1,000-plus-yard campaign in 2023 with the Jaguars, showing that he still has what it takes to be a top receiver in the league. Joining a young squad like New England could allow the team to learn from a veteran and have more success on the field, especially if the team decides to start a rookie quarterback next season.

Calvin Ridley Controversy

While Ridley has proven he can be a solid player in the NFL, he has had his fair share of controversy. He was suspended for the entirety of the 2022 season after it was revealed the receiver was illegally betting on games in 2021. Despite missing the entire season, Ridley was able to come back the next season and go for over 1,000 yards receiving in 2023.

With many free agents available, the Patriots may prioritize other positions in which to add a veteran presence, but the lack of weapons at receiver is a clear issue. Do you think that New England will sign Ridley this offseason, or will the star receiver end up with a different team?
